Nacham Africa and MAC joins prepare Future Doctors for Compassionate Care

 / May 28,2026

“Self-care is not a luxury, but a professional responsibility”
This was the key message of the awareness and discussion sessions organized by Nacham Africa in collaboration with MAC (Medical Action for Change) for medical students from the University of Ngozi and Hope Africa University, held respectively on May 22nd and May 26th.

These sessions reminded future doctors that healing does not rely only on medical treatment, but also on how patients are cared for and supported.

Through interactive discussions, students learned the importance of active listening, empathy, and a more compassionate approach to care, especially for patients experiencing pain, and/or emotional distress.

The sessions also explored the importance of self-care for healthcare professionals in order to better care for others.

Through discussions with doctors and psychologists, students reflected on how to provide more compassionate care while also protecting their own mental well-being.

Given the demanding schedules doctors often face, sometimes working up to 18 hours a day, especially in rural areas affected by medical staff shortages, students asked practical questions about how to care for their mental health.

In response, the doctor facilitator emphasized the importance of time management, resting after shifts, and engaging in wellness activities such as exercise, walking, or yoga during days off.

Students also discussed how to manage intense stress and strong emotions in the moment. The psychologist introduced practical strategies, including the “regulation partner” concept, a peer-support system that allows colleagues to pause, breathe, calm themselves, and openly share challenges to help prevent burnout.

Through this initiative, Nacham Africa continues to promote more compassionate healthcare, reminding future professionals that caring for patients with empathy also means caring for their own mental health.
